The Burdens We Bare Series

Inspired by the “market women” in Jamaica, the pieces translate the experience of carrying a basket on the head of a woman from Jamaica trying to make money to feed her family to women in the United States dealing with the enormous burdens that we carry "in" our heads as we navigate the many potholes and pitfalls set for us. These images reflect the heritage of colonialism through the incorporation of the collaged kuba and dutch wax cloth with copper. The weight of the burden of slavery and colonialism alone has been destructive, but we still survive and thrive. I create these images to salute our strength and show respect for our determination to shine despite so many disadvantages.
